All about United Nations Day!

What is the United Nations?

The United Nations is an international organization that works to make sure that the world is peaceful and safe. The UN has many specialized agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank Group (WBG), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These organizations do important global work that helps protect human rights, promote sustainable development, and maintain peace and security. For example, on May 8, 1980, the World Health Organization officially eradicated smallpox. In 2019, the UN had a summit on Climate Change, where they discussed renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and the management of  forests and oceans. The World Food Programme, a UN humanitarian organization, even received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020.

What is UN day?

The United Nations officially came into existence on Oct 24, 1945, after the UN Charter was signed in San Francisco earlier that year. To commemorate this, UN day is celebrated annually on October 24th all around the world. At its headquarters in New York, the UN holds an annual music concert. In some countries, the day is recognized as an official non-working public holiday.

How do we celebrate UN day at AIS?

At AIS, we celebrate UN day by hosting a parade where students wear attire from their country of origin/choice and parade with flags raised high. Primary school students, 6th graders, and seniors walk the track with their country, doing a loop before the primary schoolers take a seat on the field. Meanwhile, parents and family members watch from the bleachers as they pass by. The elementary school students perform dances and sing songs with their classmates, representing the culture of their language track. This celebration is a symbol of unity and respect for one another's cultural differences.
