A Taste of Germany: Atlanta’s Holiday Christkindl Market

When winter comes around, Atlanta has no shortage of exciting holiday traditions. From spectacular lightshows at the Botanical Gardens to ice skating in Piedmont Park to the Atlanta Nutcracker Ballet, there are many classic attractions during the holiday season. But a tradition that truly stands out is the Atlanta Christkindl Market. Organized by the German American Cultural Foundation of Atlanta (GAC), the market hosts a variety of local German American vendors selling delicious German food, drinks, and handmade goods. It is kid-friendly, including pictures with Santa and a Ferris wheel, but also has attractions for adults, such as Glühwein. The Christkindl Market highlights a mixture of German, American, and Atlanta culture in a fun, festive holiday event that everyone should visit!

The atmosphere of the market can only be described as bustling. While the market used to be in Buckhead and is now located in Lawrenceville, its characteristic touch hasn’t faded, and despite being far away is well worth the drive.

Made up of winding paths lined with vendors’ shops, walking through the market feels like floating down a lazy river. Because it’s quite crowded, you don’t move through fast, which gives you the opportunity to take in what each vendor has to offer without worrying about missing something. The shops themselves are kid-friendly, and there are many toys and souvenirs that a child or younger sibling might enjoy. In the distance, you’ll see a ginormous ferris wheel and Christmas tree lighting up the sky, almost like this pocket of Atlanta is its own winter wonderland. The Christmas tree is one of the most iconic and longstanding parts of the Atlanta Christkindl Market. With a colorful backdrop of ornaments, it’s the perfect place to take pictures with friends—and if you don’t fancy Christmas trees, then a ride on the ferris wheel is sure to be the perfect way to relax, sit down, and eat after wandering through the market.

One of the most memorable parts of the market is its food and drinks. It boasts not only delicious German specialities but also food from all over the world!

Personally, the gyros and falafel I tried here are some of the best I’ve ever had, and they’re the perfect warm comfort for a cold night. The apple cider is mouthwatering—hot enough to warm your cold hands, yet cold enough to sip, with the perfect fruity bite that cuts through the sweetness and leaves you refreshed and wanting more.

One of the most well known and sought after desserts at the market is the chimney cone—a crunchy, sweet tube of pastry typically filled with ice cream and caramel, topped with a healthy swirl of whipped cream. The lines for this treat can get long, but it’s worth the wait—and if you’re feeling too full after all the other food you ate, then this is just the thing to share with friends.

The Atlanta Christkindl Market is not only a holiday event with delicious food and drink, but it also highlights German culture. The Atlanta Christkindl Market replicates Weihnachtsmärkte (Christmas markets) throughout Germany, drawing on the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt, which dates to the 1600s. Nowadays, the market offers a place for multicultural exchange. The market hosts many German-American vendors who cultivate an appreciation for German culture. They sell traditional German food and drink such as bratwurst, spekulatius (a spiced shortbread cookie), pretzels, schnitzel, and the German staple: glühwein (a mulled wine). Not only are there traditional foods, but also products like hand-carved Nutcrackers, handcrafted ornaments, and zwetschgenmännle, figurines made of dried prunes. Bringing these traditions together creates opportunities for cultural exchange and the sharing of German culture with visitors of all ages.

The Atlanta Christkindl Market truly represents the meaning of the holidays, fostering connection, joy, and community across diverse cultures.
